State of the Decider

APK | January 24, 2007 | 10:36 am

Why is anyone surprised?

It’s the smartest move in politics. Once people you can blame are in a place where they can be blamed you instantly change tactics. You start demanding things need to be done, after years of not doing them. You want to make sure that corruption stops, once it isn’t your people in a place to benefit from it. You want to make sure shady dealings stop, once your people aren’t in a place to do them. The money must be counted – now that the mess you’ve made of it can be blamed on the people doing the counting, and they aren’t your people.

It’s called reaching across the aisle with a noose.

It’s an old game and it almost always works. Wanna place bets this time? When the avalanche comes don’t be surprised by the falling shit. The best thing the Republicans ever did was get a Dem. majority in the mid-terms. Now they can off-load all the blame for the last six years right on the Dems: “They’re in charge and we have these problems!” and refuse to even consider the problems had to come from somewhere.

You think that won’t play into the elections in two years?

What are you? New?

From an interview with Alan Martin (writer: Tank Girl) at badlibraianship:

So, you split up the band, so-to-speak, and Jamie continues on for a while without you. Then, nada. TANK GIRL shuffles off to that wardrobe of radioactive comic book characters ruined by bad movies (see also, Crumb’s FRITZ THE CAT). So when TANK GIRL returns, with you in tow, it’s got to raise a few eyebrows. Did you officially get custody of the character whenever Jamie decided to become a pop star?

AM: There was never a conscious decision on my part to stop writing Tank Girl stories. I actually had scripts written for the second series in the Manga magazine, but I was “edited out” by the twat that was put in charge. He stuck some terrible Tank Girl strip in instead, I haven’t read it past the first few pages, I find it as galling as the movie script. I burnt all of my unpublished stuff before I left Wales, I needed to purge myself of all that, lance the festering boil, if you will. As you can tell, it still brings about a touch of the red-mist when I talk about it.

I’m sure that a few eyebrows will be raised at our return sans Hewlett, but I’ve just got to say to the nay-sayers, purists, and general grumblers that this is a character that I co-created, this is my life that it will be supporting, this is my best work that I’m putting out there for you, and if you don’t like it THEN DON’T FUCKIN BUY IT! It’s that simple. I know I won’t like Britney Spears records, so I don’t buy them. Does that make me a genius?

And remember, I’m not some Hollywood mogul, remaking your favourite Ealing comedy into a piece of shit directed by Ritchy Cunningham. This is me, I love Tank Girl, good and proper.

As for official custody, the publishing rights to the character are still owned by Jamie and myself. I run all of my ideas by Jamie first. He was very nearly the main artist on this project, but alas, someone goofed-up.

Did the time away change your perspective on the character; the comic book industry; the movie; or life, the universe and everything?

AM: Nah.

Elementary

APK | January 22, 2007 | 9:51 am

(Via The Washington Post by way of bookofjoe)

The dusty, 1,122-page book didn’t attract much attention when it arrived this month at the Springbrook High School library in a nondescript FedEx package.

Then a librarian noticed the checkout date: May 14, 1964.

“How much do I owe for ‘borrowing’ this book for 42 years and 8 months?” Stephen N. Sampogna, a 1966 graduate of the Silver Spring high school, wrote in an attached note. “Did you miss it?”

The librarians hooted and hollered. But the return of the tome, a 1930 edition of “The Complete Sherlock Holmes,” quickly presented them with a real-life whodunit: Who was this man, and what possessed him to return a four-decades-overdue library book?

The rest of the story is just as strange and wonderful. Go on and read it.

Sunday

APK | January 21, 2007 | 6:39 pm

I am working on two hours of sleep. Maybe three at the outside. Just couldn’t get to sleep last night and then had to be up at an ungodly hour for a Sunday. You know how it is.

Still, very productive weekend. I just have to keep up this pace, or faster, for the next two weeks and then I can slow down for about a minute. Then it starts again, even faster. Easy. It’s always easy. I just keep telling myself that and acting like it’s true and keep moving. That way I don’t notice quite as much.

It works, for certain values of working.

And then when I get my week or so break this spring before I start up everything else again. But that will be lower key, more work overall but less pressure and time crunch. It’ll seem like a fucking vacation.

I’ve spent five years burning at an incredible pace and I’m almost to the end and I can see the finish line and all I have to do is make it. It’s utterly doable. Take small breaks as much as I can afford to, don’t beat myself up for spending a downtime day just laying around and being useless, pace myself. I can do this. I can make this finish line.

And yeah… after this comes more. That’s my life. I chose it. Willingly and knowingly and I’d do it again. It’s a fuck of a ride. At the tail end of a nine hour day done on two hours of sleep I have to hold onto that. I have to hold it close while I go and do some more. But tonight there will be a nice large break and some decent sleep hopefully.

Fuck. I love my life. I really do. I get to do fun things. I get to work on fun projects and work with people that get just as excited as I do about them. I get to push myself to all sorts of limits and then push further and find I can still function and stand and take it. I know what I am capable of.

Wow this is rambling. Did I mention two hours of sleep? I think I did.

Yeah. So there ya go. Or something.

What? Gorilla? Batman?

APK | January 19, 2007 | 1:46 pm

I didn’t mean to post this often today (not when I want you all to go read Talking Heads today) but I couldn’t pass this up:

“Hold that gorilla, Batman!”

Let’s take this apart. The gorilla can not touch the ground of all of Gotham will explode. So Batman and Robin’s entire plan is to hold the gorilla up themselves. That’s it. They don’t use a Bat-Hydraulic Jack. They don’t get a crane and a winch. They just stand there and take turns holding up a gorilla.

Also why will contact with the ground make the gorilla explode, Batman? Maybe his bombs. If his bombs hit the ground they’ll go off. But the gorilla’s feet? Why should they be explosive? Couldn’t Robin, like, be useful and remove the bomb belt from the gorilla so it can be put on the ground? Or is it really an explosive gorilla?

Explosive Gorilla should be a comic. I should write it.

Explosive Gorilla!

Seriously. What the fuck is going on here?

Lohan, Talking Heads, Weekends.

APK | January 19, 2007 | 10:26 am

Well, it had to happen. Talking Heads started early, they broke their start date and went ahead and launched themselves.. You’d think they could wait for their start date, but noooo… Go read it. Enjoy it. Show the guys some love.

*********************************************

This weekend is gonna kinda suck. Meeting all day Sunday and I have to spend probably all of Saturday doing last bits of work to prepare for it. So there goes that idea. At least I won’t have to wear pants while I work on Saturday. The meeting… pants are required. Not sure yet if I have to spend tonight working on stuff for it, too. I probably should, I just really don’t want to.

*********************************************

La-Lohan is in rehab. Not exactly shocking but I think it means the rest of them will have to step up their game to provide entertainment of the saddest sort. Luckily we all know they’re up for the challenge.

So first she issues this statement:

“I have made a proactive decision to take care of my personal health. I appreciate your well-wishes and ask that you please respect my privacy at this time.”

And then she does a phone interview for OK Magazine while in rehab:

I’m doing so great, thanks. I’m fine. Nothing to worry about. Thank you so much for checking in, I do appreciate it. I’m actually watching American Idol at the moment and laughing so hard!

So… she wants us to respect her privacy but she’ll call magazines to let us know what she watches on TV? Yeah I think this rehab will last about a week.
