(via IGN) Karate Kid: The Remake.

Now I present this to you as a rumor. Let’s get right to the quotes:

IGN has been informed by a reliable source that Sony Pictures is developing a remake of The Karate Kid that will be produced by Will Smith’s Overbook Entertainment and Jerry Weintraub.

We were also advised that Smith’s son Jaden, 9, is attached to star in the remake.

UPDATED: IGN has verified that the Karate Kid remake is among the projects listed in agencies’ open writing/directing assignment newsletters sent to their clients. Sony Pictures, however, has advised us they are not officially developing the project.

All right, so what do we know? Nothing much except that there is a damn big chance of a new Karate Kid movie being made, and of it being a remake.

The Will Smith angle? Who knows. Will a Karate Kid movie starring a 9yr old kid work? Will they cast Martin Lawrence as Mr. Miyagi? Will it have a new Smith rap? Oh you know it will.

So if Smith does end up attached, could this be good? Well sure it could. Smith has made a lot of fun movies, both serious and action-filled so something like the Karate Kid could be right in his sights.

But that 9yr old bit worries me. It feels too young. It starts to feel like a different animal. I think this would go a long way in the direction of a serious deep movie with very little action as young Jaden learns important lessons about violence and being a good person.

Johnny probably won’t even sweep the leg.

But I dunno. It’s a rumor. Rumor. At least right now. so let’s not treat it as a done deal. And no writers attached or anything or well… it’s a rumor. There ya go.
