O’Bannon to write Farscape comic – “It’s cannon,” he says.

APK | July 25, 2008 | 9:27 pm

First some video that was played at the BOOM! Studios SDCC panel, of O’Bannon discussing the new Farscape comic and what it will do and when it will pick-up and so on. Below the video is the press release.

BOOM! STUDIOS AND THE JIM HENSON COMPANY ANNOUNCE

ROCKNE S. O’BANNON TO WRITE FARSCAPE COMIC SERIES

StarBursting into comic stores this fall!

July 25th, 2008 – Los Angeles, CA – Today BOOM! Studios and The Jim Henson Company revealed that Rockne S. O’Bannon, beloved creator of FARSCAPE, will be writing BOOM!’s recently announced FARSCAPE comic book series. Widely recognized as one of the greatest sci-fi series in television history, the multi-award-winning FARSCAPE will make the transition to comics later this year.

“This is a dream opportunity for me – to get to continue the Farscape saga,” O’Bannon said. “The comic book series starts off directly where the PEACEKEEPER WARS mini-series left us. It’s like we’re finally getting to experience Season Five of Farscape. Not only that, but the stories in the ongoing comic series will completely tie into the upcoming Farscape webisodes. Farscape lives!”

“I can’t tell you how incredibly excited I am that Rockne will be part of the comic-book team. I’m a fan, and he’s one of the best writers around,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Mark Waid. “I’m doubly pleased that both Rockne and The Jim Henson Company folks have responded to the idea of making this series a direct continuation of the FARSCAPE TV series rather than an out-of-continuity tie-in. For fans of FARSCAPE, and with the show’s creator involved, the comic series will fill that outer-space-sized void the show once occupied. In short, it’s going to be frelling awesome!”

“Farscape the television series was a huge production, but we still had to tailor our storytelling to conform to the inevitable television limitations of story length and logistics and budget,” O’Bannon added. “The great thing about the comic book medium is that the scope and scale of the Farscape world is no longer restricted. In terms of where we can go, what we can show — these new stories will be Farscape Unrestrained.”

Not wanting to give away too much of what’s in store in the new comic series, O’Bannon did reveal, “One of the places that we always wanted to explore in the television series was Rygel’s home world of Hyneria. No matter how passionate we were about telling that story, we simply couldn’t do it. But now one of the massive-scale arcs in our first 4-issue comic series has us off to Hyneria!”

Debuting on the SCI-FI Channel in 1998, FARSCAPE follows the adventures of Astronaut John Crichton, who has a freak accident during an experimental space mission that catapults him across a thousand galaxies to an alien battlefield. Suddenly, he’s trapped among alien creatures wielding deadly technology – a battle that 20th century sci-fi pop culture never prepared him for. Hunted by a merciless military race, Crichton begins his quest for home from a distant galaxy.

A groundbreaking award-winning sci-fi production, FARSCAPE has become a global favorite. Named by TV Guide as one of television’s “Best Cult Shows Ever” and most recently named by EMPIRE Magazine as one of the “50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time,” FARSCAPE is known for the overwhelming fan-based campaign that led to its miniseries production. The show has continued to find new audiences as it airs in syndication and is available on DVD around the world.

I’ll swallow your soul!

APK | July 24, 2008 | 10:10 am

I come to you today to swallow your soul. I considered the ways to do this. Cthulhu, vacuum cleaners with the soul attachment, rebate coupons, reality TV. But then I hit upon the best, and most powerful, way of all. I will use soul sucking, demonic Hello Kitty.

And there you go. SUCKSUCKSUCK Mmmm tasty souls. Filled with cream. Like twinkies. Shut up. Shut up and look at her. Stare into her eyes.

Stare deep.

Let’s do the…

APK | July 24, 2008 | 9:23 am

(via Variety) MTV is doing the time warp on a remake of 1975 cult classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”

Lou Adler, exec producer of the original film, is partnering with BermanBraun and Fox Television Studios on the new rendition.

Two-hour remake will use the original screenplay by Jim Sharman and Richard O’Brien but may also include music not featured in the original.

Helmer and casting decisions have yet to be announced.

——————–

HAHAHAH! I can just see it now! Recast it as a reality show! Oh man this is gonna be … well … just as cheesy as the original. At least.

Live action COWBOY BEBOP movie in the works.

APK | July 23, 2008 | 3:52 pm

(via iF Magazine) We caught up with producer-extraordinaire Erwin Stoff at the NBC TCAs where he was promoting his upcoming updated-David-and-Goliath-based show KINGS. When asked about other projects he is currently working on, Stoff, let slip some very juicy news about a very beloved anime franchise.

“I’m developing COWBOY BEBOP for Fox, but doing it as a live-action film, so I’m working on that at the moment,” Stoff tells iF. “I’m really excited to be working on it, and it’s in the really early stages. We just signed it the other day.”

Before any of you BEBOP fanboys/fangirls get your skivvies in a twist about yet another questionable anime-to-human adaptation (see: DRAGONBALL), iF made sure to get an oath of fidelity to the original material from Stoff.

“I have such an enormous admiration for its creators, that our first and foremost concern is going to be a real degree of faithfulness to the tone of the movie, to the mix of genres, and so on and so forth,” he says. “When I met with them in Japan, one of the first things that I brought up was the experience that we had on A SCANNER DARKLY, and how hard we worked to remain faithful to Philip K. Dick, and that was our big concern here.”

———————–

So yeah, I dunno. I mean, I just don’t know. Is there a call for this? Could it be good? Well sure. But will it be good? I just don’t know. I really am conflicted here.

Talking Heads: Wax On, part 1

APK | July 23, 2008 | 9:31 am

Man, those bullies keep beating me up!

Aren’t you, like, He-Man?

No! Damn it! I’m Prince Adam! We just look the same, so I get beat up a lot. I’m not He-Man, for the last time, I’m telling you!

Oh, well, if you say … I’m sorry. I could teach you how to defend yourself.

Would you? Oh golly that would be swell!

Sure thing!

All right, what do I do?

Well, first you, uhhh, you take this brush and paint my … uhm … my house.

Huh?

Karate is all about house painting. For reals. Look, do it like this. Up and down. Long strokes. Up and down. Paint the fence.

Uhhh, sure. Painting the fence.

There, see, now you know karate. Oh wait! You have to wax my car, too, I almost forgot!

Huh?

Here, wax on, wax off. Do that for like the next hour. I’ll be back.

If you say so…

Right, then, now you know karate! Those bullies won’t bother you anymore, and if they do you can just enter a tournament with them and then they’ll respect you.

I don’t feel like I know karate…

You do though! Here I’ll show you! I’ll punch you and you try and block!

Ow?

No, see when I punch you you’re supposed to be all “wax off” and block it with instinct and shit. Here, try and hit me and I’ll show you.

All right.

My… rib… cage…

HAHAHAHAHA!

What the…

Why do you losers always fall for that “I’m not He-Man” line? Holy shit, look at your face! All red and blotchy! Hahahaha! And I can see your rib, poking our of your side! That’s so fucking cool! HAHAHAH! Wax off! Wax on! Too funny!

Why would you do this… to me?

I dunno, I’m kinda a dick.

No… noted.

Hey, Skeletor! Wanna learn karate?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! No.

Awww come on! I’m not He-Man, I’m weak! I’ll teach you karate!

He-Man! He-Man! He-Man!

Am not!

He-Man! He-Man! He-Man!

What the fuck is wrong with those two?

Never teach the criminally insane the secrets of karate, Daniel-san.

Pat Morita’s spirit! Why didn’t you warn me earlier?

Are you nuts, kid? I’ve been wanting to see you well and truly fucked up longer than I waited for Happy Days residual checks. Destroy him, Johnny! Ha! Sweep the leg! Man, you are some kind of sucker, kid. Anyway, seeya!

Wait… no… Pat Morita’s spirit… don’t leave me to die…

No worries, kid. No one dies on my watch! I’ll save you!

Aw fuck.

TO BE CONTINUED!

Golden Girled.

APK | July 22, 2008 | 2:04 pm

(via Estelle Getty.com) Sadly, today July 22, 2008 at 5:35 a.m. Pacific Time, we said our last good-byes to our little friend Estelle, who passed away and made her journey to the great beyond. Although it was a trip that she never wanted to take, she went gracefully, in the comfort of her own home, surrounded by her family and her very loving care-givers.

Estelle’s legacy will live on and on through the comedy and laughter she gave to us all, which will forever keep us laughing out loud.

Sophia has died. Kicked the bucket. Is no more. Let all Golden Girls fans mourn. That means you, D.J.

And uhm, anyone else.

Two things

APK | July 22, 2008 | 12:26 pm

Thing the first: Spaced: The Complete Series is out at long last. Region 1, in America, only years and years after it should have been released here. Still! New commentaries and extras and all the episodes. So worth your time and money. From the folks that would go on to give you Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz

Thing the second: Ever seen a leopard attack and kill a crocodile? Wanna?
