It looks like they’ve retouched the image themselves – there is no apostrophe to be seen anymore.
I like DailyKos’s take on it (http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/8/29/642/84217/405/578270): “perhaps this student is a child who got left behind?”
As a fellow webmaster, you made a poor choice in hotlinking the images for the following reasons.
1. As was just proven true, the original site has full control over the image. You wanted to prove you did not manipulate it while allowing McCain to manipulate the image all he wants- thus destroying your story.
2. You are stealing McCains bandwidth. That’s a bad idea, and I personally would have edited the image to something more fun.
You should have taken a screenshot of the image, and also copied it to your own sever.
I did this the way I did so there could be no doubt that *I* didn’t edit the images at all. Knowing they would be changed.
I completely understand your reasoning for not saving the image to your computer and using a hotlink, but I do wish we had a permanent copy of the original image. Because that’s fucking hilarious.
