Once more into the music breach we go! This is the monthly post where I tell you about a few albums I’ve been listening to a ton, new or old. Let’s get to it!
I first got to know Sam Greenfield while he was playing with Cory Wong and the Wongnotes, as part of the Horn Heads. He also has his own solo stuff (which is why he recently left the Horn Heads for a while) and Sam Greenfield Sucks is his 2022 release. Just a fun album full of pop and jazz, mixing together through both funk and other avenues to create a really enjoyable groove.
I am a Tom Petty fan. I mean like one of those “owns every recording with every band I can get my hands on” type. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that I sometimes fall into a hole of listening to a ton of Petty stuff some months. This month it’s been the Live at the Filmore (1997) collection. Which, for the record, is four solid hours of high quality live Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers music, along with a ton of covers. So…yeah.
Mary Erlewine’s The Real Thing is a wonderful recent release. Her music sounds crisper than ever but just as emotional. I’m not sure where to place it in terms of category. Alt rock? Soft rock? Sort of “That stuff you would get a lot more of in the mid90s but might be making a come back now and we’re better for it”? Either way, give her a listen and really fall into the steady melodies she spins out.
That’s it for this month! Next month…we’ll have to wait and see!
