What I’m Listening To – May 2023

As we leave May and enter June it comes around again to discuss the music I’ve been listening to this month. As always this is a small sample of stuff I listen to, but it is the (roughly) albums I’ve listened to the most in the past few weeks, be they old or new.

Starting us off we have The Punk Funk Mob’s Revolution from back in 2010. They manage to hit that great Punk Funk tone, reminding me strongly of Prince when he worked with 3RDEYEGIRL. Very similar, powerful, vibes, which are also a ton of fun to sink into.

Coming in after that, I ‘ve been digging the hell out of Last Call for Lost Soul by O.P.A.L. The album lives at the crossroads of synthwave, punk, rock, funk, and dance. It slides to where it needs to be on a given tracks and really pops off a couple of times across the album in wonderful ways.

Finally this month I’m gonna have to give it to Sammy Rae & the Friends. Sammy Rae is an amazing vocalist and performer by herself, but with her, well, friends, the songs get a bit brighter in tiny ways. It’s upbeat, soft rock folk Americana really, and it just works so solidly you don’t release you’ve listened through it twice.

That’s it for this month. What will next month bring? I don’t know yet, but we’ll get there…
